I must confess: I am not – I repeat: NOT – a huge fan of beer. That’s why it took two weeks, a long night out and a Belgian to get me to drink my first beer in Brussels.
We were chatting and drinking – wine, in case you are wondering – in a small pub/bar in Etterbeek, when out of nowhere the man next to us joined our conversation. He had noticed we were speaking German and obviously felt the need to see how much he remembered from his German classes at school.
All of us being slightly tipsy and him not remembering too much German, we soon switched to English. And roughly at that time, he insisted on buying the next round of drinks – passionately recommending his favourite brand of beer (at least for this evening).
And that’s how I was introduced to Westmalle Tripel.
As a non-expert all I can say is that it was different – it had an intense taste and was just a bit heavy. (It has 9,5% alcohol.) That said, I quite enjoyed it. And I will definitely try some other Belgian beers in the near future – just to have something to compare it to.
